Brief History
In 1939 Elder P.J. Henderson became Pastor and had the church built at its present site. The building was a wood frame and faithful members like mother Nell Miles and Mother Virgie Lomax worked hard to better the church. In 1959 Bishop B.S. Lyles appointed Elder Timothy Scott as pastor. There was tremendous growth and new additions under Elder Scott such as a baptism pool, a new lot, and a basement which was the fellowship hall. Elder Scott was appointed as Bishop of Northern Mississippi Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Churches Of God In Chirst. He in turn appointed Superintendent Earl G. Wright as pastor. Under Superintendent Wright, the pews were bought and other renovations were made. He was called to his heavenly reward in 1982. Superintendent B.J. Williams became the next pastor of Peter’s Rock. Under this great leader the dining hall was moved from the basement to the back of the church. Elder Williams was a great visionary and because of his vision, we are where we are today. In 1995 our current Pastor, Superintendent Joseph L. Hawkins was appointed. Since then we have been blessed to expand in many areas of the ministry. Under the vision that God has given him for the church, the completion of a new sanctuary became a reality. The following ministries have been established: food pantry, jail house, nursing home, sick and shut-in, radio broadcast, and Youth Activity Community Center which houses Helping Hands. Our mission is to take the city for Christ. We the members of Peter’s Rock are endeavoring to do a great work for the Lord! |
